Adam's story

Adam's story

“My experience at Harwood House led me to want to work in mental health, and I took a position as Mental Health Consultant at a Theatre company specialising in productions addressing mental health.”

I took myself to hospital

“Let's start from the beginning. My life was on a downward-spiral, and I was doing things like damaging the house where I was staying. I actually took myself to hospital, as I could feel myself becoming mentally unstable. I was diagnosed with psychosis. Looking back, it was quite brave to take control of my own mental health like that and seek help.”

I didn't have anywhere to go

“While it was up to me to decide when I was ready to leave hospital as I was there voluntarily, I didn't have anywhere to go due to my destructive behaviour at home when I was ill. However, Response brought me to Harwood House, which I now call home. I was able to form new relationships without worrying about being judged for my past.”

I was inspired to return to working

“We're like a family at Harwood house, and the support staff bring us together through walks, day trips, board game nights, and movie nights. Our closeness means we encourage each other to grow. For example, when I moved in, other residents had jobs or voluntary positions- which inspired me to return to working. My experience at Harwood House led me to want to work in mental health, and I took a position as Mental Health Consultant at a Theatre company specialising in productions addressing mental health.”

I made a lifelong friend at Harwood House

“Being at Harwood House made me realise that isolation was a big trigger for my mental health. I made a lifelong friend there, who I'd cook with, go on walks with, and we'd watch films together. I never felt I didn't have anyone to talk to: the staff members were all so approachable and friendly. Although initially I wanted to move home, I came to know that being part of a wonderful community like the one at Harwood allows me to be my best self.”
