Abbie's Story
Before Response
“Hi, I’m Abbie. Before coming to the UK, I worked in other charities like UNDP and after moving I did my master’s degree in environmental science, but ultimately I wanted to work more directly with people. When I discovered the role at Response, I realised this was an opportunity to really give back.”
Growing at Response
“Over the years I’ve met so many nice colleagues and they were very supportive. I started out at Response part time as a Bank Worker and I had the opportunity to grow within the organisation and take on more responsibility. Now that I’m an Area Manager I also get to help other staff members achieve their goals and move through the organisation. ”
Rewarding work
“Surprisingly, the most challenging aspect of my job is also the part that makes it the most rewarding. Supporting Clients to move through recovery and achieve their goals is challenging especially because the process isn’t always a straight line. But when I know I’ve helped someone to move on it’s the most rewarding feeling. When I was a Senior Project worker, I was involved in a lot of one-to-one work which really made me feel like I was involved in making differences to client's lives.”
You don't necessarily need experience!
“To someone thinking about working in mental health I would say that empathy is even more important than direct experience. At Response, we work together to empathise with those having a difficult time and use common sense to solve the problem.”
